Go with the computer

It depends how much you listen and your overall love of music, but a computer based system has a lot of advantages that will likely draw you closer to music. A large hard drive is a must, but they are getting cheap. Having an extra hard drive is also important so as to make sure you do not loose everything in case of drive failure or a virus. After that it's mostly deciding on a sound setup that can vary considerable.

One step at a time, I guess. The main question would probably be to decide how good of a system you want, but from my own experience, having a good external DAC is where most of your money should go. Maybe using it with a transport for the time being until you get the computer all set up. No real need for a separate computer, especially in the short term. Simply placing you computer in an out-of-the-way place can save you a lot in having to mess with expensive stuff to get a "quiet computer."

It’s not really that difficult.
