I have no experience with off the shelf solutions, but here is how I did it, and it could not have been easier.
I started with a G4 ibook. Why? It's silent (I've never heard a fan come on), it runs iTunes in bit perfect resolution ( I guess pc's don't), it has usb 2 which is important for some usb dacs. iTunes is very easy to set up...literally 3 minutes and no manual necessary.
For storage I use several notebook hard drives in firewire cases. They are almost silent ( I never hear them) and they run off of bus power...no walwarts! I just bought a large hardrive to act as a backup to those smaller notebook drives. It is important...you don't want to rip again and hard drives do fail.
My dac has a usb input, so now I can use a 5 dollar cable instead of a very expensive impedence perfect spdif cable. I am using a TwinDac Plus dac and have been very happy with it...the best digital I've owned.
So all this gets you in around $3500 max (more if you want to run the TwinDac off of batteries). You want remote control? Possible with Salling clicker. You want to set up another ststem in your house with the same music? All you have to do is add a Airport Express .
Most importantly, it was easy...no software glitches, no reboots, no hassling with EAC, everything worked the first time. And I don't miss my SACD player one bit.
Steve
