Where did you have the DVD drive connected? What was it set as (master or slave)?When you got the error that there was no OS the problem was likely to be due it trying to boot off of the wrong drive. This is corrected in the bios by choosing which drive you want it to boot from. The other possibilty is that the system did not detect the drive with your OS, but you seem to state that it did.
The DVD drive may be OK with the 40-strand cable, but you probably should be using 80-strand on the hard drive. Still, it should have booted I think.
