The HDMI to DVI cable did it! We watched a movie tonight and it looked fantastic. The Mac desktop looks like it should now, very clear and precise on the 42" LCD.I would tell anyone that Mac's DVI to S-video adapter is a waste of money if you are intending to use the computer. It's ok for Front Row, but the DVI to HDMI is the way to go.
As time is going by I am more and more surprised at how wonderful sounding the Mac is with iTunes and CDs. It is a very good sounding unit and I prefer iTunes over my SqueezeBox2.
