Mike, Mp3 are fine as information but for real musical enjoyment you need uncopmressed or lossless music files on your PC.

The technology is leapfrogging. With CD players, there were several jumps in quality since 1983. PC-based music reproduction is in young developing stage. However, done right, PC playback already surpasses CD player playback.

I have spent a lot of time experimenting. Since you do not have stereo stack and speakers, you can start from the scratch.

Here is what I would suggest for your consideration:

1. PC as a storage/playback device (one you have - $0 cost)
2. Chaintek AV710 card ($20) with optical digital out
3. glass toslink cable 6-10ft ($20)
4. Panasonic digital receiver SA-XR55 (around $200). Just hook up with glass toslink cable to the sound card.
5. Speakers, the best you can afford (for best bang for the buck, build your own)

With this system that cost almost nothing you will gain valuable experience. And any of your friends with expensive rig will scratch his/her head and question their sanity.

Buying cheap and competent equipment today relieves you of pain
seeing your $1000 DAC becoming obsolete tomorrow.

Good luck !!!
