I have been experimenting. The contestants include: Electro-Harmonix, RCA grey glass VT-231, Ken-Rad VT-231s, Sylvania 6SN7WGTAs, and Sylvania VT-231s.From this lot the EH and WGTAs are the only eligibles for use as The Designated Driver. On my (ahem) old style Mk.III chassis, this would be the tube next to the outboard edge of the conning tower. Here I settled pretty quickly on the Sylvania WGTAs - crisp and quick, nice top-end extension *and* enough timbrel weight across the spectrum that they don't lean out. The E-H are quite respectable, a wee bit cloudy around the edges compared to the NOS, but perhaps the best of the current production.
In the remaining four positions I'm advised that (taking the driver as #1) positions 3 and 4 should be reasonably well matched. Here are tried all sorts of combinations. Rather than commenting on each I'll cut to the chase... my *current* favorite is an RCA in positions 2 and 5, with Ken-Rads in positions 3 and 4. I find this is a felicitous mix - each brand brings its virtues while the combination ameliorates dominance from either.
Other combinations can also work well, (eg. Sylvania's VT-231s in 2 & 5 w/ RCAs in 3 & 4 is nice) but the K-Rs surrounded by RCAs is the one I use most often.
