Re: autoformer

Tubevibb, I am really sorry, but I have no idea at all what you are talking about in your response to my previous post. For example, where do you get "6 weeks" from? Are you saying that you tried the Zeros in your system for 6 weeks and did not like them? If so, I believe you and you are entitled to make your own judgment, but you are one of the rare persons who has come to that conclusion. OR you may be referring to Paul Speltz' policy of allowing a home trial for 30 days (not 6 weeks, AFAIK) on the Zeros. My message to you is simply to say that if you have not actually tried the Zeros in your system, don't dismiss them as undesirable.

Also, obviously if one has a high impedance speaker, e.g., early Quads, early Martin-Logan CLS I's, etc, one may not need Zeros to mate with an OTL. In other words, use 'em if you need 'em without fear of added distortion or limiting the bandwidth. One other way to deal with an impedance mismatch between amp and speaker is to use NFB in the output circuit to reduce the output Z of the amplifier. This can be done with circlotron or Futterman type OTL amps and with any transformer-coupled tube amplifier. NFB however has its own potentially unpleasant side effects.
