I guess if you are determined to make a change you have to decide whether it's more costly to
cough up the dough for some nice NOS 6SN7s ($100 for a pair should be more than enough) or
to build or have built an outboard 12V DC regulated power supply for the MP3, plus a way of
attaching it to the audio chassis of the MP3 and wiring it specifically to the linestage tubes. It
could be done, I am sure, but not for less than $100, even if you do it yourself. (Whoops! Does
your MP3 use 12AU7s for the linestage? If so, more work involved even to use 6SN7s.)OTOH, you could run the linestage tubes off a 12V car battery, using a trickle re-charger
between listening sessions. You would still have to re-wire the MP3 to make it work, and an
unregulated battery can drift down below 12V during long sessions. You could use two batteries
in series for 24V and then regulate the output.OTOH, 12SX7s have appreciated in value such that maybe you could trade off a pair of milspec
types for some good NOS 6SN7s.
