The Circlotron does very well as a balanced output but not so well as a single-ended output. Usually though, all that is needed is to tie the unused output to ground (pin 1 of the XLR). For example if pin 2 is to carry the signal and pin 3 is unused, pin 3 would be tied to ground. If it is not, a loud buzz will probably result. We use this type of connection here when we have occasion to run the system with the RCA input of the amplifiers.
Every now and then there are situations theat crop up where the Jensen transformer might be preferred. One example is where the main amp (for example, a pair of M-60s) is used with a subwoofer system that has a single-ended input (often the subwoofer can be set up with a balanced input, which is the more elegent solution, but this is not always possible). While the transformer is not a perfect solution, it does allow similtaneous use of both SE and balanced amplifiers off of the same output of the preamp.
