Hi,
I suppose you are wright Michael - from a theoretical point
of view using a transformer to combine both phases of a
balanced preamp with a cyclotron type output stage will result in
the best quality. Some of the noise present in the output
is mains related and will be in phase in both inverting
and non inverting outs, combining them in a transformer will
reduce it, as the transfomer will nul the common mode signals.
Also, as you said, impedance of the combined outs will be lower
than from a single phase.
However , you will have to use a high quality transformer ,
such as the Jensen, otherwise you will loose more introducing
a new coupling element in the chain then you gain using it!
best regards
Francisco
