Mark and I at CES heard a modified Sony XA777es with 5687 tubes used for summing and output duty, with an external power supply for the tubes using an Electraprint transformer. This device was in the Diapason/Tenor/Jena Labs room. The sound had a recessed mid-bass but good resolution of vocals. I don't recall which company did the mod on the SACD, but it was likely Jena Labs. Their web site appears to be munged up with some Atma-Sphere pages, but in what I can make out, I don't see this modification offered for sale.Regarding VSE kits: Mark and I had poor experiences with their Super Regulators, where they just threw all the parts into a plastic bag without regard for the static sensitivity of the semiconductor devices. This was several years ago, and I'd like to hear that they have improved their packaging methods before I would pay any money for anything other than a circuit board from them.
I've not heard SACD as good as the CD reproduction from my Wadia 861, but I haven't gone out of my way to audition better machines. The software is too limited and costly to be of interest, and the dust has not settled from the format war. If anything, it seems to be getting more confused.
