I wrote to Fred Voltz at Emotive Audio. He confirmed he uses 5651 glow discharge 90 volt regulators in power supply regulation as well as active load circuits for both cathode and anode service in the Sira preamplifier. He reports a subtle improvement over a transistor-based current source for the cathode follower, as used in the less expensive Erato preamplifier. He described the improvement as a larger image and an absence of an edgy quality that becomes fatiguing over long listening. However, Fred did not distinguish the VR tube contribution from the tube-based current source that incorporates the VR. It sounds like he has used either all solid-state or all-tube cathode follower current sources without experimenting with Zener diodes in a tube-based circuit.
