I am using a 1 meter length of Nordost Red Dawn between the Placette and the amps, so capacitance is very low. When we placed the active preamp in the chain in place of the Placette, we all immediately noticed the increase in bass (there were 4 or 5 of us in room, seated throughout the room). I am not refering to just deep bass; rather the notes were simply more filled out, the tones were a bit more full and rich. Overall I really think the active was better for rock or music where the beat is very important (that elusive PRAT). If you want to experiment cheaply, find a used pair of the Ultimate Attenuators. If you like that sound, you'll like the Placette. I know I can beat the sound of the Placette with an active preamp, but it would have to be a very expensive one, in my opinion. As it stands, daily I derive a great deal of enjoyment through use of the Placette. I find I want to change the volume often, and life without a remote just doesn't cut it. I also have the optional balance feature, which I also use a lot.
