Re: Shelter 901/ vdh FROG/Grasshopper/ Benz H20 - Decision Help

Hello Bob,
As the owner of a Frog and a Colibri, I must say VdH cart is a wonderful piece of musical instrument. They have natural and lifelike sound, Ralph once told me that Colibri sounded closest to original master tape, this is true.
The disadvantage of the Colibri is the low output (0.2mV) and may not be as dynamical as those with 0.65 mV output (this also depends on your phono amp). The Colibri is sometimes too gentle and not muscular enough---good for chamber music but not an orchestra. Grasshopper is good for all kinds of music and its 0.6mV surely mates well with most phono amps. But if you are willing to pay for a Grasshopper, why not a Black Beauty? Black Beauty is even better than Grasshopper.
Have you also thought about Benz Micro Ruby? It is much cheaper than a Grasshopper but it is very musical, a fine piece for music lovers. But mind you that BM is sometimes too sweet and there is coloration in the midrange. It surely is warm and HF is fast, open and airy.
Ortofon has all the tonal beauty of European instruments but its output is also too low to be amp-friendly.
