Acoustat made a direct-powered speaker during the 70s as well. The problem has always been if one is to upgrade either the speaker or the amp, both must be replaced. It is dangerous and a liablility to make an amp that is intended to operate an ESL without building it into the speaker!
The Audio Amateur published a construction article for such an amplifier back in the 70's.
