Have you ever tried pentodes in the driver stage? I'm thinking of the same balanced input stage, without cascode.
Why? Gain with 6SN7 and a plain single-ended CD output is too low. I have only one source with variable output, and don't really need an outboard preamp. 6SN7 cascode produces around 1:(25+25) gain with SE input, and pentode pair can make 1:(50+50) and more.So... what about pentodes?
