spkr cables

Hello, Henry Sadovsky. My real name is "Rupertdacat", but I go by "Lew". Some years ago, Ralph casually remarked that he thought the Goertz spkr cables were a nice match for Atma amps, because they have a low characteristic impedance. "Characteristic impedance" is a constant for a given cable (the square-root of the inductance per foot divided by capacitance per foot) and is independent of length. (As you can see, the length parameter cancels out.) The Goertz cables have a much lower characteristic Z than most (about 4 to 6 ohms, I think), and this in theory will minimize signal reflections back to the amp that can create hash and possibly diminish bass response. As usual, Ralph was correct. I've never found any cable that is really "better" than the various Goertz ribbons. I currently use silver, but the copper ones are fine, too. As a corollary, the Nordost spkr cables have a high Z (>100 ohms for most versions), and to my ears sound shrill and steely with my amps.
