Thanks for the information - the right side of the circuit board for each channel contains 1- 12au7 and 2- 6sn7 tubes. Is this a MK II? The arm is a JMW memorial and the DIN connector plugs into the arm base and then terminates as coaxial - do I need to connect right to the wires as they come off the arm (this may interfere with the movement of the arm)?
Also, it makes sense that a balanced sheilded wire will be lower in noise but as I mentioned, there is a lot of noise regardless of whether anything is plugged into the phono inputs. I tried some Telefunken 12ax7 and it was slightly quieter but still a long way from where it needs to be. The cartridge is a MC and the output is only .2mv - I could be wrong about the loading - I'm trying to get the right number. Now that I opened the pre-amp to change tubes I see that the terminal strip is wired across pins 1&3.
