John:One of Mark Gilmore's suggested tweaks is to add capacitance to the output supply. He says that you can't have too much. The older amp came stock with four 1,500µF caps. It's relatively easy to wire in parallel a pair of 2,200µF electrolytics - there's just enough room on the underside of the the chassis for them. My impression is that adding the caps resulted in significantly more solid bass and overall a smoother sound. Also, just like a new amp, after adding the caps there was a marked improvement in sound over time. I estimate the sound continued to improve through 50 -60 hours break-in.
Interestingly, Ralph's current version of the M60 MkII comes with six 1,800µF caps with the option of adding another six for a total of 21,600µf or more than 7 times the capacitance of the original!! My new amps are incomplete - It will be interesting to hear how they differ from the older ones.
As for the Caddock resistors: My first M60 was built with the stock resistors, which are excellent. But at some point I decided I could have done a better job of construction so I dismantled the amps and ordered new parts from Michael Percy Audio. The Caddock resistors are the unusual TF020 type which are flat and rectangular with radial leads and are a bit of a challenge to install. These are advertised as being "ideal...where the best possible sound is required." (The resistors in the Atma-Sphere Caddock resistor package are the standard axial-lead type.) I can't say what qualitative difference they make. The re-built amps sound wonderful, better than my original effort, but I think that is the result of many factors, including overall better construction.
