Re: Hold on there

I suspect many SET heads are so enamored with the SET sound because this topology usually gets the first watt, or perhaps even the first 100 mW right. SET amps then suffer from limited bandwidth and dynamic range to reproduce music attempt the illusion of live music. I've found that a good OTL, not only gets the low power stuff right, but it's not limited in bandwidth or power. Isn't it a good thing I'm not VERY opinionated?

I have a difficult time with your assertion that "detail can be a bad thing". If that's the case, there's another problem somewhere in the recording or your system. I say, get a better recording or fix your system.

Meanwhile, go find some music that speaks to your very soul and try your best to forget about all the electronics that get in the way!

I agree with you when you say, "There's no way you're ever going to reproduce music like it was recorded", but I do believe you might get close or even better. On occasion, there's the recording that suddenly exposes what really does sound real in my listening room. I live for that stuff.

If you enjoy electronic music, all bets are off. This kind of musical artform was never produced live, so the playback system defines its ultimate sound. All our preconceived rules go out the window.
