I'm really concerned you may not have your audiophile priorities straight, Anand. The simple
and obvious answer is that you NEED the new speakers and a turntable too. Now that you
have one of the finest amplifiers available you must not let your momentum subside, not even for
a moment.I've recently tried what I call my M-30s on a pair of Maggie 3.6s. My M-30s are essentially an
M-60 with half it's output tubes removed. They do have their output stage power supply
capacitance upgraded and have the new 100 uF V4 plate bypasses too. I was surprised how
well these little amps drove the 3.6s. This was not true of the Maggie 3.5s. The new 3.6s are a
bit easier to drive. Some day, I'd like to see the impedance curves on the new Maggie line. I
still can't believe I like the new 3.6 even better than the MG-20s.Maggies are no known as Rock & Roll speakers, so I don't expect them to behave that way.
Much past 100 dB, they do start to compress a lot. Under that level, they are capable of
conveying real magic to the listener. I think your musical taste will do well with the 3.6s. I agree
with Harry. Keep the speaker wire very short. Put your M-60 right behind the speakers, and if
you're good, you can keep the length under a foot!As far as the turntable goes, I'm not sure what to suggest. I've never had anything new. I'm
fond of SOTA and Oracle. There are lots of good used ones on the market today. Both are
well supported by their respective factories with parts and upgrades. I'm in love with the Grado
Reference, but have used the Sonata and been very happy too at a lot less money. As far as
arms go, I'd best stay out of that and not start too much controversy. I tried some very strange
combinations discussed by Michael Fremer, and been very pleased with the results. The budget
was shoestring!
