RE: Altec 414-8c cabinet plans

You could use BassBox Pro 6 to help you design a Onken style cabinet key word help it is a tricky cabinet to get tuned right that's why they are not popular. Plus, they are large and give up punch to play low and honestly, they are not a very good design that is why no manufacturer ever used them. Your much better off with a ported cabinet.

Do you know why the Onken cabinet was designed by Jean Hiraga back in the 70's? It was to get lower bass out of speakers that were not designed for low bass. So, the cabinet is trying to compensate for something the speaker cannot do. This is always a bad thing.

I have owned many Altec Lansing speakers from model 19's to 604's and 605's also Altec A7 and none of these speakers produce bass that will punch. One of the best Altec speakers was the big red monitors that used master labs time aligned crossovers and a helper woofer for bass.

I don't want to discourage you but the 414's bass will leave you wanting more no matter what cabinet style you use. And the 807 drivers are not very good they have 13,000 gauss magnetic strength in the voice coil gap the 808/802 drivers have 15,250 the 807 are about 3dB lower in volume. the 807 do not extend out in the high frequency's as far as the 808 and the 808/802 drivers' high frequency is not that good compared to modern drivers that have 16,000 to 18,000 gauss and improved phase plugs and diaphragms.

I was once addicted to vintage Altec & JBL I did not want to believe that modern components were better, but they are.

So, if I was you and I had to keep the 414 & 807 I would buy BassBox Pro 6 and design a ported cabinet for the 414 you will get by far the best performance out of the 414 with a ported cabinet. And I would use a modern CD constant directivity waveguide or a Tractrix instead of the dated Altec horns.

User Floyedandrews has responded to you using the same speaker in a ported cabinet tuned to 50 HZ add a subwoofer playing from 50 HZ down I guarantee that will be way way better than an ancient dated obsolete Onken design.
