Note that Don describes a transition that minimizes diffraction but (if i recall he worked for EV at the time)
The way the math works, if one wants two different pattern angles in H and V, then the shape gets confusing If one wants to loose pattern control at the same F both H and V.
If one had 90 degrees horizontal and 45 degrees Vertical, the height of the mouth has to be twice the width. AND that is a horn that doesn't come to a point. This is an astigmatic point source, the optical equivalent of one focal length H and a second longer one V.
So how could one make a CD horn / make a horn that losses pattern at the same Frequency H and V
Well the JBL 2360 was an example of how and instead of a smooth transition use an abrupt transition to cause diffraction along that slot effectively producing a new source to fill out the horn horizontal.
