I'd head on over to Tom Danley's place and offer slave labor in return for an education. His tapped horn and rotary sub-woofer are a couple of fresh ideas in a stale field. He credentials speak for themsleves. To bad his partner has no interest in the home audio market as I get the feeling Tom would be willing to give it a go.
Look up Danley sound labs, Gainseville, GA. Yorkville makes a tapped horn speaker through an agreement with Tom's company BTW.
And yes, I am with you....all those back loaded horns and supposedly full range drivers don't cut the mustard for me. But trying open baffle with a bass reflex on the bottom and some sorta tweeter on the top ain't half bad and very easy to make.
Now none of these options are worth a damn when it comes to WAF/SAF.
