IIRC, Gizmo once told me that these big guys needed an amp with a very stiff power supply to control the cones. He always used huge industrial tube regulated supplies on all of his home-brew SET amps. He said that a typical unregulated SET or PP amp just couldn't do the job. Have you tried a SS amp with a high damping factor? Also, any added resistance in connectors or cables will add to the underdamped nature of the 308's.
The Sunlight specs indicate that an OB should work, and I know Harvey used them on big doors. Once upon a time he gave me a link to a German site detailing the work of a young enthusiast who recommended an open backed box, much like the old radio consoles of the 30's and 40's...sorry, but I have lost the link.
