Agreed that there's no free lunch, and no solution is completely transparent.That said--from what I've heard personally and my research--active crossovers are potentially much more transparent than passive, and offer many advantages.
I plan to start with the cheap Behringer digital XO, and see what happens. If it's good, I can always do a line level analog XO. In fact, I've got a tube Marchand unit that I'll build after I use the digital to optimize passbands and slopes.
So much of audio is mysterious and psychoacoustic--it's easy to get caught up in dogma and other superstitions. I'm excited at the prospect of combining new and old techs. I guess most of us are here because we want to see for ourselves.
