When I was tweaking my A5s (before I went nuts and started building new horns from scratch) I made Hiraga X-overs and ran them for a while. I did not use any boutique parts. I merely bought generic items from a local electronics supply. They sounded nice, but I too ended up adding tweeters.
During that time I also tried bi and tri-amping the system before returning to the original A-500C crossovers that I got when I bought the A5s.
Perhaps if I had gotten into more exotic components I would have been wowed by the Hiragas. As it was they were nice. Overall A5s are very fine sounding systems, but with a blank sheet of paper one can do significantly better.
