My recent thread below and the subsequent postings about Must Have SA-CD's have unearthed quite a few opinions and tips. Not sure about you but I found this interesting reading. It gave me some buying tips, plus it motivated me to pull out SA-CD's I had not listened to in a while. These types of posts have their limitations, I mean how many can we do with 'only' 4000 SA-CD's, but I think we can do a few more. So here are 4 other 'forgotten' and/or 'must have's' out of my collection:
Gil Evans &Ten. "Very good old sound". Gentle swing. The sound has so many omissions so evenly applied across the audio spectrum that it becomes a joy to listen to :-). Depending on your system it may or may not sound bright. I would venture that people with excellent digital sources and silk dome tweeters will find this disc to sound not bright at all. Sure, on track 3 there is a cymbal crash that does not sound very beautiful, but I never got the urge to turn the volume down on my system. For those of you not familiar with Gill Evans, this gentleman is not Bill Evans though he does play piano. He appeared in Miles Davis' 'Birth Of The Cool Sessions', plus he worked on other Miles albums of note. This was his first record as a band leader.
FIM's 'River Of Sorrow'. It's stunning at many levels: the packaging for starters is exquisite, probably the best of any SA-CD out there. The sonics are one of the best I have in my collection and the music is deep, flowing, beautiful and completely different to your normal diet of Jazz, Rock and Classical. This is Chniese classical music, mainly featuring the erhu. If you enjoy music you owe it to yourself to try this disc and be surprised.
The Golden Earring's 'Naked Truth'. For Earring fans, I'd say go for it because the SA-CD layer kills the new CD layer along the usual lines :-) Were the Earring a UK or US band they would be a global rock band of BIG proportions. But they are Dutch. Limited marketing reach. They sing in English - the lead singer Barry Hay is from the UK so no problems with silly Dutch accents. This is the genuine article folks! It ROCKS. Old school style. No drum machines. Real music. Real musicians. Real people with real instruments. Mostly acoustic since this is one of those unplugged sessions. No wimpy acoustic session though. These guys sound big, assertive. They are master craftsmen. Their music is both raw as well as melodic. They have penned many a catchy tune, with great guitar and acouctic bass fills. Their voices harmonize nicely. I cannot recommend this SA-CD enough. Forget they are Dutch. Buy it.
Mel Torme's 'London Sessions'. What a great disc! Sound, performance, hell even the liner notes are great. The sound is rich, full, big. Mel Tormé tends to use fairly contemporary composers in his repertoire at times outside the realm of Jazz. On this disc he performs Billy Joel (the excellent song 'New York State Of Mind'), Stevie Wonder, Charles Aznavour and Janis Ian tunes.
