Thanks to 2395 and bhoage for their response. After reading 2395's comments I decided to check the way my system is configured. Turns out the SACD player works fine, the problem is the PSAudio P500 powerplant that I use. Not sure what's wrong with it, but the SA14 works fine when plugged in directly.

I for one am not ready to drop SACD; think it is a superior format when compared with RBCD although SACD's appear now to be the almost exclusive domain of small classical labels, i.e. BIS, pentatone, Channel Classics, Telarc etc. Works for me.
