New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

Some complications.

If you want to turn off all the video electronics, you can by simply pushing a button. The manual recommends this for optimal audio playback. However, there is no indication on the unit that this has happened. Furthermore, everytime you change discs, it turns back on the video curcuitry. If you care about this, you'll have to remember to turn it off each time, unless someone has found a way to turn it off all the time.

The device was really design fro video, and some of the buttons don't work right for SACDs (and I assume for CDs- I haven't tried those yet). The track advance/back buttons don't work. I found you have to use the up/down arrows in the center ring followed by the central enter button. To replay a track from the beginning, you press stop and then enter. Maybe there are others ways of doing these things, and maybe they will be fixed in a firmware up-grade.

The most serious problem I have found so far is the following. On some classical music (and maybe other genres), the track number changes even though the music is continuous. An example is the transition from the 3rd to 4th movements of Beethoven's 5th symphony. I was listening to the SACD of Pictures at an Exhibition with Byron Janis plus an orchestral version, and at the transition to the Great Gate of Kiev, the Oppo comes to a complete stop and inserts a pause betwee tracks. This happens in both versions. I played the CD layer on my Ayre CX-7e, and it was continuous, as it should be. The Oppo pause was very annoying. I haven't had a chance to check if this just happens on this recording or if it always inserts a pause between tracks.

I bought the Oppo only for audio use for now, and I don't use my TV with it after the initial setup, so it is certainly possible. I guess it took me a long time to answer your question directly!
