Re: Question for Oppo 970 users

Matthew,

The only problem I would foresee is with DVD-A discs without the use of a screen. It would be difficult at best to try to navigate to the 2-channel hi-rez portion without it. You can program the Oppo for 2-channel DVD-Video for the DVD-A disc but you will be losing some in the translation. The Oppo can be programmed in advance for 2-channel SACD where navigating is not nearly as much a problem nor Redbook CD 2-channel. Funny you ask about the use of the Oppo with a Benchmark DAC. I just recently tried the Oppo 970 that I own with various DACs since the 2-channel sound was flat and 2-dimensional. I tried the Pacific Valve Modified DIYEDEN Great March, a friend's California Audio Lab, a MSB Link DAC III with upsampler option, a Benchmark DAC 1 and a Channel Islands Audio VDA-2 with VAC-1 power supply. I can honestly say it takes a very good DAC to make the Oppo sound better. The cheap one-chip solution that Oppo uses doesn't help the unit to be a very good audio transport in my opinion. Using these same DACs in my Sony 200-disc megachanger obtained much better results vs. the Oppo. You will notice a favorable increase in depth, air and detail using the Benchmark DAC but I think your Benchmark will be held back of it's full potential with the Oppo. The Oppo makes for a great video picture and video transport. Don't believe all the hype you see about this player's audio performance. I have seen on the Internet that it is running close to the Marantz SA-11 in SACD performance. I have heard the Marantz and it sounds much better than the Oppo in Redbook or Hi-Rez. You will find like I did, connecting the Benchmark DAC 1 and playing your Redbook CDs will sound better than the SACD or DVD-A performance out of the Oppo. Hope this information helps.
