Logically, that can be dismissed as an explanation because:
1) Other recordings using the same recording technique and same venue--e.g. the even more magnificent Beethoven/Stravinsky/Rorem set--do NOT exhibit the same phenom. of 'boom' as soon as the cellist bows her strings.2) It occurs in two different rooms with very different furnishings and dimensions within my apartment. Experiments with different stands and different speaker locations again merely provide more and better evidence.
Player and amp can be discounted since the same phenom. can be heard on my backups--Pioneer in place of Denon.
So, if it ain't that, then what? My current theory is that the level of the 'cello and its reverberation/resonances is such as to place a burden with which my humble Wharfedale speakers cannot cope. While, as I have said, the Beethoven is free of the effect, it is clear that if the'cello level were boosted even a tiny tad more, we'd be having problems. Threshold time, if you like....
The problem, therefore, is simply that currently being a pauper, my speakers are shit, right? Not so fast. In thousands of recordings on vinyl, cassette,RBCD, DVD-A, and hundreds of SACDs, NO OTHER RECORDING EXHIBITS THIS LOWER MID_RANGE SATURATION. Which is why I asked for Kimber's opinion. The bass on this recording seems unnaturally prominent to a guy who not only has truck-loads of Quartet recordings--including many on very closely-miked Praga SACDs--but also is used to hearing Quartets LIVE!!
And why does the 'effect' disappear in Stereo mode?
So, Mr Kimber, any 'tweaking' to impress the owners of Wilson speakers etc. etc.??!!??
And, more importantly, is the new primaria Alison Krauss's doppelganger??!!??
