I don't know that Sony unit, but a pure DSD implementation has its advantages which sound like what I think you are hearing. Even on a hi-freq compromised system I like the "DSD sound". I also agree that some people like the added detail of a tipped up system, but I grow fatigued quite fast with a hot top end (and at times the extra highs excite my tinnitus, something I'd rather stay away from.)

I have the Sony DVP-S9000ES and SCD-C555ES and I used to also have the SCD-777ES and SCD-XA777ES and think they were all in their time great players for their prices.

I didn't really measure the break in time for these, I just left them playing 24/7 for two or three weeks and truth be told I don't now remember exactly what changed besides the ease of the music.
