Re: Krell SACD Standard-- Hard-Core MONSTER or light-weight Wanna-Be?

I've had a SACD standard for about six months now. I've always been impressed with its SACD performance, but, at first, I was not at all impressed with it on redbook.

It's redbook sound is definitely on the laid-back side. With my old Vandersteen 3As, which are also laid back, the sound was very flat and uninvolving. In fact, I was very close to selling the Krell.

Once I upgraded the rest of my system (to Dynaudio Countour 3.4, Simaudio W-5 and Sonic Frontiers Line 3), my opinion of the Krell was transformend. In an otherwise neutral-to-forward sounding system, the SACD Standard's smoothness and detail shine through while still maintaining the life of the music. I also switched to an all-balanced setup, which I've read is important with the Krell (though I can't confirm it since I made so many changes at the same time).

I've been meaning to try the Cary 306SACD and/or the Ayre, but, for now, I'm very satisfied.
