All 4 of these operas are great for an opera novice, though none of them sounds anything remotely like the Verdi Requiem. (Although the 'Turandot' chorus scenes probably come the closest to the huge choral climaxes in the Verdi.) If you want something on a vast scale, with a large orchestra and chorus, then start with the 'Turandot'. For touching drama and pathos, you can't beat 'Butterfly', though 'Traviata' and 'Boheme' have their share of those qualities as well. And do investigate that Decca Originals 'Tosca' RBCD I mentioned earlier--I think you'll like the 'Te Deum' scene (end of Act I), as well as Price's singing. (It's selling for a bargain $18.99 at Rasputin's in Berkeley.)Russell
