Hmm, a few suggestions:Why not try a Squeezebox (assuming you have a PC you can use as a music server)? I haven't heard it, but have been told it sounds quite decent.
If you like DVD-Audio, I would highly recommend the Panasonic DVD-S97 (which retails for less than US$300) - it sounds very decent and has BB PCM 1791 DACs, but it does sound more impressive on DVD-Audio than CDs (the latter still sound all right, but won't blow your socks off).
Joe and Allen tells me the Sony NS92V player sounds good, I listened to a modded one at Joe's place and it sounded quite nice, but I don't know how a stock unit will sound.
Buying a used CD player may or may not be a good idea - DAC technology has advanced a LOT in recent years, so you really want to take advantage of that, plus the laser is probably failing (or about to be!).
