for 6 months or longer were Hybrid SACDs, over and over again. When something treats you so unkindly you cut it loose! It really is that simple why you do not understand I have not a clue.
You said "My tape player went through an intermediate stage before it broke completely where it could pull a short tape with no problem but it would slow down on a long tape,"
I've never had this problem as I followed the manufacturers advice and avoided tapes longer than 90 minutes. But it still doesn't compare as every tape you loaded was recognized as a tape and it played the tape. It never refused to play the same tape sometimes and other times play the tape. Until you have went what I went through four years ago with the my first Sony 9000ES and later with the three times Xindak SCD-1 you will never know the pure hell of waiting for the intermediate TOC problem to become a permanent TOC problem so it can be fixed. You must remember under Xindak’s warranty I got one replacement and the problem very slowly started again in about 6 months, getting bad enough at the one year point Xindak replaced it only to start developing again for the third time on the Xindak only days after the 18 month warranty ended. It went nearly 2 months with playing every other SACD on the first try. Then it would play NO SACDs on the first try, but would play 90% of them on the second try. That lasted for another 3 months until it was down to 50% then about 2 months later it played NO Hybrid SACD. During this whole time it would play Single-layer SACDs, CDs and CD-R's perferectly on the first try. Never ever had to reload a single-layer SACD, CD or CD-R.
If you haven't lived with the constant getting up and down to reload an SACD (it takes the Xindak about 30 seconds to read a Hybrid SACD versus about 2 seconds to read a single layer SACD) over and over again, cleaning an SACD that is not dirty just so you can hear music. You get to the point to where it is not worth the trouble anymore.
I really hope this helps you understand the reasons why!
Teresa
