i do agree that if i find that there some gain in artistic merit i might consider an RBCD release of something that i already own but i am finding less and less reason for doing so.There was a recent discussion here on Mahler 9 and i think i have around 10 cd,s of that.ditto for Beethoven,Brahms,Mozart etc.I went through that period where DG,EMI etc were releasing-and re-releasing REMASTERED versions and it becomes a question of the law of diminishing returns .getting less satisfaction with RBCD duplication. At least with SACD there is a question of artistic merit along with enough of a technological advance that justifies the purchase. This is my present ownership of Schubert 9th.
SZELLCLEVELAND-Sony Essential classics sym.8+9
Sony masterworks Heritage-sym.7,8,9 and assorted
EMI two-fer-other cd being Btvn 7/colin Davis
DOHNANYI/CLEVELAND-sym.8,9
SOLTI/VPO/DECCA-9th only
KUBELIK/VPO/DECCA"LEGENDS"-sym.7,9
MACKERRAS/SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCH/sym.8,9
SACD:SZELL/CLEVELAND/SONY- the infamous sigle layer sacd
KUBELIK/BRSO/AUDITE-2 channel only
ON ORDER;NOTT/Bamberger sym-this cycle has shown promise and Nott as a conducter shows promise.i already have the sacd 3?+4.
SO ....as you see it really becomes hard for me to justify another RBCD purchase as some of the one i own already have received "good" reviews.Maybe if i was studying CONDUCTING and was able to read scores and compare that might make some sense of buying duplicates but i hope you can see the quandary i am in.atleast in sacd i have signed on/purchased the NOTT cycle because at least there is a good balance of artistic merit and technological advance
