Reference Recordings HDCDs.If you had a repeated history of nightmare on and off troubles with SACD hybrids like I did, can you really say what you would do?
The first time I quit SACD my original Sony DVP-S9000ES, would only read about every other hybrid and I had to trick the playing into doing that. The Sony ES shop in town said they couldn't fix it until the problem was repeatable. So I went over six months with the player playing 3 out of 4 discs. And the SACDs it refused to play I would wait a couple of days and then it may or may not play it then. And sometimes I had to re-load the SACD as much as 10 times and then the next time I tried the same SACD it would play perfectly. I nearly pulled my hair out. But still I couldn't take it to the shop because it was not repeatable!
So when it was in and out of the shop for 3 1/2 months I bought a cheap Music Hall turntable and was totally blow away by the excellent sound quality of LPs. So when my original DVDP-S9000ES was fixed after the third try by Sony it sounded too "Digital", I let it re-break in for a couple of weeks and it still sounded too "Digital". So since it was working and reading the TOC of hybrid SACDs perfectly I sold it while it still could.
I only came back to SACD because I found a "tubed" player and it was not made by Sony. Turns out the transport was and my hybrid SACD problems started all over again! Coming back to SACD was the mistake, in my defense all I can say is I was seduced by tubes.
Getting three bad copies of one recording is much different than multiple players refusing to play the music you feed it.
Happy listening,
Teresa
