New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

except on one thing....

Hi,

The one problem I have with his final note.

SACD is in no way a technical sucess. When compared to a WELL IMPLEMENTED CD Player and a CD engineered to the limits of what the format can manage in terms of sonic quality I have so far failed to observe anything that SACD does better.

I agree that few CD Players are of the neccesary quality and fre CD recordings engineered to the required standards, but equally, few SACD Players are engineered to the neccesary level of quality where they approach the best CD Players in terms of sound quality and few SACD's that contain mainstream music are engineered any better than their CD counterparts.

Finally, compared to high sample rate 24Bit PCM the DSD format is pretty bad. In a comparison of strictly recording methodes of DSD vs 16/48 & 24/96 PCM compared to the mike feed DSD was not substantially closer to the mike feed than 16/48 (there was a clear and relaibly audible degradation) but 24/96 on the other hand appeared to remove any appreciable difference at least in the context of the studio's setup.

Add to that the simple fact that 24/96 PCM is trivial to edit while DSD is a major PITA to edit and you can see easily why few studio's ever bothered with DSD recording and why most SACD recordings where sourced one way or the other from PCM Masters anyway.

Ciao T
