Despite the record companies' claims to the contrary, silver discs are fast following the larger black ones on a path towards... niche market. Most of us got into audio reproduction in high school or college. If you want to hook them - that's where you start.Except that high school and college kids aren't buying silver discs, let alone black ones. They're downloading to their ipods, legally or illegally. Any growth in high end will have to target these kids. Why would a young professional with a new job and a fat new paycheck want to drop a couple of grand on a turntable, a technology that was the province of an aging population before he or she was born. Yes there will be a "Michi" or two among them but they will be few and far between. Not nearly enough to support a company. Meanwhile too many high-end manufacturers are marketing to an aging population and decreasing market. The smaller the market, the higher their prices need to be to maintain their margins. The higher the prices the smaller the market gets. For many it will be a losers game.
Meanwhile, that young professional decides he wants his a better sound than his Ipod will give him. Amazingly, there aren't many places he can go. AFAIK no one is making high rez, uncompressed content available for download and "media center PC's" designed to act as sources for downloaded music are still pretty low end - despite the fact that hard drives have the potential to be better sources than jittery CD and SACD players.
The first company to hook and keep these guys (and gals), by offering them a high quality product and an upgrade path as they make more money will change not only hi-rez , but also hi fi.
