Re: Live Symphonic recordings are NOT "costless".

I don't want to start another AFM vs recording consumers (Us!), but there is recording scale, different amounts for different types of projects. There is no "big upfront fee", and I don't think any American Orchestra records for free on the possiblility of royalties later. If they record at a reduced rate for a limited pressing and get more later if it sells well, ala SFSO, that's not a royalty, just an adjustment made to the the original rate. Royalties are separate fees based on sales, and American Orchestars don't get royalties, and they don't get paid again for reissues. The recording company owns the recordings. That's another reason for the inhouse productions that we've been seeing. Also, EMG agreements, if an orchestra has one, is paid by the Orchestra Association, which is the Musicians' Employer, in addition to whtever pay scale is negotiated. If an Orchestra doesn't have one, management may have proposed lowering the basic scale rate to pay for it. Not many Orchestras would accept that. I for one am glad that Telarc still records with Cinci and Atlanta. Also, as I understand it, Conductors, not Orchestras have the recording contracts these days.
