New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

I guess you can't believe everything you read...

Everything I've read had good words for the PM digital filters (I missed reading the Stereophile review of the SimAudio the first time around.) Now you are offering a confirmation that they are perhaps not all they are cracked up to be. (I can't discount your opinion since, as an owner of an Ayre C-5xe, you are obviously a man of impeccable hearing and taste!)

As always, the best way is to listen for oneself, but I've never had the opportunity. When we started our first digital project, we ruled out the PMD-100 as it didn't offer support for the 96 kHz sample rate of our DVD player. When we were developing our CD player they had just replaced the PMD-100 with the (very!) short-lived PMD-200 that never really reached production status.

I've always preferred the sonics of the "slow rolloff" digital filters as pioneered by Wadia. The PM digital filters were pretty much at the opposite end of the spectrum, with a very high number of taps and a very sharp rolloff. So maybe it isn't surprising that some people don't like them as well as some other (presumably slow rolloff) digital filters.
