Recently a work colleague bought a 2ch only system that is essentially similar to mine but a logical step up: MF A5cr CD player, MF kW amp, B&W 802D speakers. I could perhaps have ventured down the same route.Or perhaps something similar to Ted Smith (although Ted has an m-ch system - lucky him!) - EMM transport and DAC, Moon monoblocks, JPLabs Nova Be speakers.
Or perhaps as you suggested I could have gone for say EMM, plus Halcro dm10 and dm68 (there was a second hand dm68 pair available at a good price for a while, and I was sorely tempted!!!) plus say the B&W Signature 800s.
Lots of options. I do know that Ted's system completely blew my old system away - it made my system sound like a boom box. And of course, mikel's system was in another dimension yet again. So much for diminishing returns.
After listening to some of the above systems, I decided I could not live with the flaws in my old system. I could clearly hear the system running out of steam for loud complicated sections - a distinct hardening of the sound, audible "compression", muddiness, a stilted delivery. For various reasons, I started blaming my Denon amp.
I'm definitely more pleased with my current setup. In fact, it's quite possible I may have overspent - I now notice that my system sounds considerably better than most amplified live performances (of course, it is nowhere near the subtlety of an umamplified live performance, but then you have audience noise to contend with).
But have I reached the same heights as say mikel? I doubt it. So I'm pretty confident that if I poured my money into a 2ch setup, it will yield an improvement.
Am I willing to go there? Probably not. Unfortunately, I am one of those shallow people who gets interested in anything bright and shiny, so it's hard for me to target and focus where I spend my money on. I am looking forward to buying the first HD-DVD and BluRay players (and I will probably end up buying both), plus I'm seriously considering upgrading to a true 1080p projector. I also have enough photographic equipment to rival a semi-professional photographer, and I've recently bought a nice HD camcorder plus all accessories. And our car is pretty nice as well. So I'm pretty happy with my current setup and unlikely to go any further, because I've already frittered away all my spare cash.
