Home Hi-Rez Highway

New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

i've always believed you can make any format sound really good ...

... if you pore enough money and effort into it. including cassettes (for evidence the nakamichi dragon, which coupled with good tape gives you a good taste of high end analog)

LP is probably the most mature format in terms of our understanding of how to really make it sing. It is also the most "open" format - anyone can come up with a wild and crazy idea on how to improve LP playback, and implement it. otherwise why would a format fraught with so many limitations and issues sound so good on the right setup?

with CDs, I believe it is only recently that we have started to understand how to make the format sing. Recently for me anyway - I definitely learnt a lot building my own player(s). To me, a lot of the criticism on CD (specifically, PCM 44.1/16) can be overcome, but it is a very fragile format - it is very easy to get mediocre sound.

with SACDs, I believe the journey has only started, and we are nowhere near what's possible, despite some very good players today. Sure, it is easy to manufacture a low cost player that sounds surprisingly good, but realistically a $200 SACD/CD/DVD player will never outperform a state of the art LP system (and maybe even CD).

For example, I believe CD playback compatibility is constraining how good SACD players can be. I tried building one myself (a player that only plays SACD and nothing else), but I discovered it's almost impossible for a casual hobbyist to build an SACD player. It's a pity Sony and Philips paranoia about format licensing and copy protection sets a barrier for innovation. If only they will "open source" the format I think we will see some truly innovative designs that are not limited by a reference implementation.
