Quite right, but then again their experience should make them aware that the rewards of listening via better hardware would fuel their desire for more titles, and the availability of so many great recordings should make them want to hear them at their best. That is, of course, they're not close-minded enough to genuinely assume they already are hearing everything worth listening to at its best via another medium. It's almost as if there's a form of jaded exhaustion throughout the audio community that saps any desire to get into and make a new format work. Most of us have done the LP thing, gotten into tape, and then made at least a token effort to get decent CD playback. There just isn't enough gumption left to fly off in yet another direction.
There are people who love music to the extent that they want to hear as much of it as they can reproduced in any format at the highest level they can attain. Then again there are a greater number of others who, while having the capability for playback in several formats, tend to direct the main thrust of their efforts into only one of them. It wouldn't only be an expensive proposition to bring all of them up to the same standard, but it would also require a broader commitment of the time and energy that most of us just don't have in reserve after our other pursuits, like earning a living.
Sometimes I wonder whether I'm taking all this stuff a bit too seriously; but then I'm reminded why I do whenever I hear music that communicates something important. We're all in this hobby pursuing that "important something." I suppose we can't all be taking the same path along the way, but I can't understand how the curiosity of anyone aware of music's rewards could permit a casual acceptance of anything less than the very best access they can attain.
