Re: New SACD player purchase..

I would stay away from both these players, not on sonic grounds, but in terms of
their reliability. I auditioned a Krell, and it flaked out on me (kept hanging up in the
middle of playing a disc and had to be rebooted). The revised Krell may be better,
but inherently Philips transports (on which this is based) seem to be flakey.

The Marantz is unreliable as well. I tried an SA-11 and its transport made a huge
mechanical sound in the middle of playing an SACD and finally choked up.

I tried a Sony SCD-777es which sounded fine till I played back an SACD on which it produced a deafening digital noise (this is a common problem on 777es players) at
the end of an SACD. The Sony XA9000es is a far more reliable unit -- it never
crapped out, and was quick and easy to use. I would far prefer the Sony 9000es over the
Krell (I speak as someone who owns Krell electronics -- the SACD Standard is not
upto the usual high quality of Krell hardware).

My advice: stick to the Pioneer transport players (e.g, Pioneer or Ayre) which are far
more reliable, or the Sony XA9000es (which does both MCH and stereo). It is by far
the best buy in the higher end SACD market at this price range (< $2K).

Unlike the case with CDs, the transport makes a big difference with hi-rez players. I don't
mean sonically, but in terms of the reliability and speed of reading discs. Hi-rez discs
are much more critical of transport malfunctions and laser alignment (due to the higher
data density).
