Or in my case 12, since four channels of my 7.1 require bi-amping. The main advantage comes in matching all three fronts, although if you have a non-identical center channel and/or box-type TV defracting up the center channel's acoustics, then matching the C amp to the L/R amps isn't that big a deal.Matching beyond your fronts (the other 2-5 channels)is of negligible benefit. Nearly all the tonal qualities of matching your surrounds to your fronts come from room acoustics, placement, and speaker type (how many parts of your surround speakers are identical to your fronts?) Same arguments for surround monoblocks vs. a multichannel amp: nearly no gain, lots of pain. Or in my case, also forcing tubes for woofers or LFE channels results in way too many cost and bass quality disadvantages.
Multi-channel priorities, IMO:
1) Acoustics, speaker locations, bass nodes, first reflection points
2) full size, or identical center channel speaker, no TV boxes in the way
3) Processor settings (DPLIIx vs. L7, distance, bass management, levels)
4) similarity of surrounds to front
5) amp sound and similarity of L/C/R amplification
6) all the outher things we whine about on these boardsChris
