is not to buy CDs that sound awful unless it's from an artist that I really must have. Some CDs, even some of those from the majors, sound good (e.g. the RVG versions from Blue Note) so why waste money on Telarc releases that don't? Even the CDs Mr. Bishop mentions in the linked e-mail (e.g. Norah Jones) are available from Japan with better sound quality if I want them.I could understand if the normal CDs were compressed for playing on the radio or in cars, but the CD layer on SACDs was kept as good quality. Then the SACD would really be the audiophile version of the product. But of course they can't afford to do that because it would become apparent that SACDs offer only a slight improvement over a well recorded, well mastered and well manufactured redbook CD.
Besides if I buy SACDs then I'd need to buy a good quality SACD player too and that really is a waste considering the long term viability of the format (IMHO). Obviously nobody in this particular forum is going to agree with me on that one!!
