The live ones are 1,4,7,8,11,15. The rest are studio. So largely studio.Following on Teresa's comments about her recent arrival in this repertoire; I *do* have a lot of Shostakovich recordings going back over 45 years of collecting and have perhaps a larger perspective which might help you. There is no substitute in MCH because no other set is complete. Caetani's set on Arts has some good stuff so far but I do not believe it is at all likely to prove better overall than the Kitajenko. To find other great sets of performances one must go back to the superbly even Haitink which I like but I know others do not, and to the Russian performances by Kondrashin, Mravinsky etc., none of which are well recorded - though often quite tolerable. These symphonies are amongst the finest of the 20th century and no top performers are likely to be less than interesting in such great repertoire. Buy Kitanjenk and then go and listen to others over the next few years as your familiarity grows.
I'd be interested in any more thoughts you have Teresa. It is *such* exciting music isn't it! How is the discovery going?
Dave
